Traffic Unit

Responsibilities:

The Traffic Unit provides traffic education through lectures and seminars to any groups wanting our expertise and support. Enforce Provincial Regulations and City By-laws; Investigate ALL serious motor vehicle collisions, injury and fatal. Provide over-dimensional loads & funeral escorts. Conduct Check-Stops with our partners: Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Alberta Infrastructure / Transportation, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch.

Alcohol:

A member of the Traffic Unit is responsible to oversee the responsible for the repair, maintenance and training for the Intoxilyzer 5000C & Roadside Testing Devices, Intoxilyzer 400D & Alcotest 7410 GLC.

Check-Stop & Impaired Driving Program:

A member of the Traffic Unit is responsible to the Medicine Hat Police Service for providing regular Check-Stops and providing liaison between the Police Service and partners such as: Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD).

Collision Analysis:

All members provide expertise in: investigations, forensics, photographs, analysis and reconstruction experience to professionals such as: insurance companies, engineers and legal, as well as to the members of the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Hit & Runs:

A member of the Traffic Unit is responsible to oversee the Auto body shops in and within the surrounding area to ensure compliance with Regulations and help curb the ever increasing number of drivers who refuse to accept their responsibility of reporting collisions involving unattended vehicles.

Occupant Restraint Program:

A member of the Traffic Unit is responsible to the Alberta Occupant Restraint Program, including child and infant seats. That same member is also a member of the Southeast Alberta Safety Alliance Society.

School Safety Patrol Program:

A member of the Traffic Unit is responsible to work as liaison officer to the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) School Safety Patrol Program working with the Regional Coordinator. The member provides traffic education to patrollers in grades five and six within elementary schools. The best patrollers are selected every month from their school as “Patroller of the Month” and rewarded by local businesses sponsors a meal. Selective Traffic Enforcement Program:

Every month, the members of the Medicine Hat Police Service and Traffic Unit (TRU) Teams to concentrate their efforts on the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), enforcing those traffic offences focusing on the leading causes of collisions. See this month's focus here.
