Alarm System Registration: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw 3716 requires all security alarm systems to be registered prior to becoming operable.  To register a security alarm system complete the Alarm Systems Registration Form and return it to the Medicine Hat Police Service by mail (mhps@mhps.ca), fax, email or delivered in person at 884 2nd Street SE, Medicine Hat.  Once registered you will be provided with a sticker with a registration number to place on your alarm system panel.

Noise Bylaw: City of Medicine Hat Community Noise Standards Bylaw #4353 outlines acceptable noise levels.  To request a noise exemption, permit a written application must be submitted to the Chief of Police at least five (5) business days prior to the proposed activity and must contain the following information pertaining to the work or activity for which the exemption is sought:

  1. the name, address, and telephone number of the applicant
  2. the address of the site
  3. a description of the source(s) of noise or sound levels
  4. the period of time that the exemption is desired
  5. the applicant’s reason(s) why the exemption should be given; and
  6. a statement of the steps that will be taken to minimize the noise or sound levels.

Responsible Animal Ownership: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw #3935 regulate animals and activities in relation to them. All dogs and cats must be licensed.  Dog Licence Application  Cat Licence Application

Outdoor Burning Bylaw: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw #2703 regulates outdoor burning to reduce the risk of uncontrolled fires and nuisances. Permits are required for fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and barbecues (fire receptacles) for the purpose of cooking or obtaining warmth, provided the appliances for cooking or obtaining warmth are used on the property of the resident, or in a public area at a location approved by the authority having jurisdiction.

 Public Roads: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw #4346 regulates and controls use of the highways and public roads.

Part 1 of the Bylaw speaks to Parking concerns. Parking in the City of Medicine Hat is regulated by both the City of Medicine Hat and the Traffic Safety Act of Alberta.  If you wish to appeal a parking ticket complete the Parking Ticket Appeal Form  

Part 2 of the Bylaw speaks to Use of the Streets including pedestrian safety, bicycles, e-scooters, operation of a vehicle, and skateboards as well as responsibilities for clearing snow and debris and not placing an electrical wire on or above the sidewalk at a height less than 2.5 meters.

Property Standards:  Unsightly property is a property that, in the opinion of a Bylaw Enforcement Officer, is detrimental to the surrounding area because of its unsightly condition.

Weed Control: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw #1982 contains a list of restricted, noxious and nuisance weeds.

Secure Loads: City of Medicine Hat Bylaws 1805 prohibit waste from being transported in a vehicle unless it is covered and properly secured to prevent it from coming off or out of the vehicle or trailer it is being transported in.

Outdoor Smoking and Vaping: City of Medicine Hat Bylaw #4136 prohibits smoking and vaping in outdoor places, unless within a Temporary Designated Area.  Outdoor public places include:

  1. a Grandstand
  2. a Park
  3. a Public event
  4. an outdoor basketball, pickleball or tennis court; or
  5. an outdoor rink.

In addition, the bylaw specifies that no person shall smoke or vape within 5.0m of the boundaries of an outdoor place.

Application to Discharge Firearm within City Limits:  City of Medicine Hat Bylaws 4346 and 2527 both identify that no person shall discharge any firearm, air gun, or air pistol on a highway or elsewhere within the City unless authorized by the Chief of Police.  To request an exemption an Application to Discharge Firearms form must be submitted.  Permit to Discharge Firearm Application Form
