Fraudulent Tax Refund Scam

The Medicine Hat Police Service is currently investigating an emerging fraud relating to individuals presenting falsified T4 documents and employment records in an effort to obtain a tax refund.

To commit the fraud, individuals are attending businesses that prepare tax refunds for personal and business income and are presenting a manufactured T4 document. The documents typically contain a company name which is fake or no longer operating and therefore, are not contributing to CPP or EI. The employee tax contributions are artificially inflated and as a result, it appears that the individual is entitled to a tax refund. This fraud has been reported by offices in Medicine Hat as well as in other cities across Canada.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is working with the Canada Revenue Agency to gather information on filed returns using this illegal method of fraudulently obtaining money.
