Chief's Message
FORWARD from the 2010 - 2012 MHPS Business Plan:

Our mission is “Serving and Protecting our Community with Pride Through Professional and Progressive Policing”.  In order to accomplish our mission we must continually review every aspect of our activities to ensure that the citizens of Medicine Hat are receiving maximum service in the most efficient manner possible.  In that light, I am pleased to present our business plan for 2010 – 2012.  This report is a result of extensive work by the Executive Team of the Medicine Hat Police Service.  As you will see a great deal of community and internal consultation was considered when developing the proposed strategies.  I am confident that the framework, as presented through the strategies, is a foundation that will support our Service requirements, into the foreseeable future.

Our vision is to “Optimize the Safety and Security of Our Community”.  Our strategic plan is a view of the future that will provide clarity to our staff and the community about where the organization is going over the next three years.  This document must remain flexible and adaptable considering changing needs and future innovations that create further efficiencies.

Organizational change occurs in many different ways and the most effective change processes are incremental; they break down big problems into small doable steps (Kouzes and Posner 2002, p.208)1

The eleven strategies outlined in this business plan have varying impacts on the Police Service budget.  Some strategies will realize savings, some will have a neutral affect and others will cost the Service and the community.  By weighing the current economic climate with the need to maximize community safety we have carefully divided the strategies over the three year period.

Integrity, accountability, respect and courage are the core values that we as a Service have agreed to embrace.  This business plan is a reflection of our mission, vision and values and further demonstrates our desire to serve our community.
