MVC Fatality

Cody David MICHELL, 25 years old of Medicine Hat , has been charged in relation to the Motor Vehicle Collisions on 12 Street North and on Parkview Drive NE. MICHELL appeared in Provincial Court today for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing. He remains in custody and will return to court September 26, 2017.

MICHELL is charged with Dangerous Driving, Dangerous Driving Causing Death, Disarm or attempt to disarm a Peace Officer, 2 Counts of Criminal Hit and Run, Possess Stolen Property-over $5,000, Possess Property-under $5,000.

The MHPS would like to thank all those who assisted first responders at both scenes and helped bring order to this most tragic event.

On September 11, 2017 at approximately 1:06 PM a 2002 Dodge Ram was stolen from Bassett Crescent NW, along with an attached utility trailer.  While the suspect fled in the truck, he reached excessive speeds, estimated at around 100 kmh. As the truck entered the intersection of 12 Street NE at Division Avenue N it struck a van with two occupants causing that van to flip and strike another vehicle, causing minor injuries to those inside each vehicle. The stolen truck continued to flee from that scene at an extreme rate of speed through the Crescent Heights High School playground zone and east on 12 Street NE.

As the stolen truck approached the T-intersection at Parkview Drive NE, it entered the intersection and struck a Toyota Camry at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Toyota Camry, an 18-year-old female of Medicine Hat, was pronounced deceased on scene after attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

A 25-year-old Medicine Hat male is in custody facing charges of; dangerous driving, dangerous driving causing death, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and attempting to disarm a police officer.  Additional charges are pending further investigation. The male suffered minor injuries resulting from the collisions and was treated at hospital.

The male is scheduled for a bail hearing on Tuesday, September 12,, 2017.
